Week Four Wrap-Up: Maine

The Georgia Southern Eagles moved to 2-2 in the 2025 season after a 45-17 win over FCS foe, Maine. Georgia Southern fans were a little worried in the first half, but the Eagles pulled away in the second half to beat the Black Bears handily for their second win of the season.

After Georgia Southern’s drive went three and out, Maine struck first after a five play, 70 yard drive ended with a 27-year touchdown run by QB Carter Peevy put the Black Bears up 7-0. The Eagles ensuing possession ended with a fumble that as recovered by Maine near midfield. Maine went for it on fourth down and were stopped by the Eagles defense to get possession back for the offense. Over six and a half minutes later, Georgia Southern finally answered with a 3-yard touchdown run for RB OJ Arnold to make the game 7-7.

The next possession for Maine ended in a punt and Georgia Southern took over at the Black Bears four-yard line. 11 plays and 69 yards later, the drive stalled out but K Tripp Bryant was able to convert a 22-yard field goal attempt to put the Eagles up 10-7. Maine’s ensuing possession ended with a punt after the Georgia Southern defense once again prevented their offense from moving the ball and the Eagles took over at their own 24-yard line. This time, WR Dalen Cobb ended a 76-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run of his own to put the Eagles up 17-7. Maine’s last possession of the first half ended with a turnover on downs and the Eagles looked poised to make a run at a two score lead into halftime, but QB JC French IV threw an interception that was returned 76 yards for a touchdown by Black Bears DB Devin Vaught. That touchdown made the score 17-14 and the Eagles took a three point lead into halftime.

The second half was a completely different story as Georgia Southern outscored Maine 28-3 in the second half to secure a 45-17 win. The Georgia Southern defense played a much better half and four of the six Black Bears possessions ended in turnovers or punts. QB Weston Bryan had a 1-yard touchdown run early in the second half, WR Dalen Cobb caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from QB JC French IV, WR Camden Brown hauled in his fifth touchdown of the season early in the 4th quarter, and RB Jamarian Samuel scored his first career touchdown as an Eagle late in the game to solidify a big win.

The Georgia Southern Eagles next game will be their Sun Belt Conference opener against James Madison University (JMU) in Harrisonburg, Virginia on September 27, 2025 at 1:30 PM. That game will be streamed on ESPN+ or available on Georgia Southern Sports Network.
